I work well over 40 hrs a week and have been caregiving for 20 yrs. I get paid $14.00 hr, which is not fair for two people in thier home. I sometimes stay the night. Please tell me what I should be making at least for 2 people?

Dear Rene,

I know you are caring a heavy burden by caring for two people. Do you work for an agency? Are you self employed? I know we all want to be compensated fairly for what we do, but it the hourly wage is very dependent on where you live?

You can also call the local town office and speak with the department of labor or with a social worker to get more information.

Please know we all have options. I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

I am in rural Maine, and use 2 agencies part time. The one closer to 'the city' costs more, but includes light cleaning, paperwork, taxes and insurance for workers.. That one is $26/hr, time and 1/2 on major holidays. The other is $21/hr., more for any cleaning or driving. I believe both pay their workers about $13 to $14/hr. Now, that is for only one client, and is mostly companionship and safety when I am not home.

How long have you been looking after this particular couple, René?

Don't be offended, but to be blunt the time to negotiate an hourly rate you consider fair was before you accepted the job rather than after. Has anything changed in terms of hours or tasks since you agreed to take it on? Have you discussed the role or your pay with the person who hired you?

It's easy enough to find out what pay rates should be in your area from job sites like Monster.

$14/hr seems low for 2 people with those conditions. I don’t blame you for looking into this. I’d call around. Ask other caregivers in your area what theyd charge. Good luck.

Are taxes withheld, or are you being paid under the table?
