Only 6 hrs/week subsidized by county, the rest is at private pay rates of $22 to $25/ hr. Can barely manage this and more is not affordable unless we can get more assistance. Our income probably would be over the limit for Medicaid. He doesn't have Medicare Part B, just Part A and private health insurance with BC/BS.

I'm looking into VA benefits. I am not sure if he qualifies for a home health aide instead of companion care from a CNA, and would the health aide even be covered by the private health insurance? I am really stressed and in over my head with this. He has COPD, chronic back/hip pain, difficulty walking even with a walker, mild memory problems, partly incontinent (wears depends-type pants). Any suggestions?

There is always a way to qualify for Medicaid even if your income is high. It would entail structuring your income and using up your assets to pay for care. If you own your home and/or you need a Miller trust set up I would consult an Elder attorney to set it up for you. Your state may have in home LTC assistance under Medicaid but unfortunately there may be a waiting list. I went through this recently and ultimately the only option was to get my LO into a nursing home. We could not afford private pay home care and the waiting list for in home Medicaid was long. But the first step for you I think would be to get qualified for long term care assistance. Rest assured it can be done, but you may need to have an attorney help with it if your income is over the limit.

Caregivers are so expensive! You might be able to pay less by hiring privately, but it's more work for you to have to hire and manage and pay taxes and payroll. But it is cheaper. You could try www. Care.com to find a private caregiver, they can also help you with the taxes and payroll.
I'm a geriatric social worker and I make videos to help family caregivers, I've made one about Creative ways to Pay for Long Term Senior care that might help you. Here is the link: http://bit.ly/2HW5f0S

I also recently went through the VA Aid and Attendance application process for my Dad and made a video about my experience that might be helpful for you. Here is that link: http://bit.ly/2YnwSZL

An aid, caregiver or CNA is not usually covered by private insurance, however, if he qualifies for VA A&A, you can use that money for anything, they pay you directly. Good luck to you and your husband, and let me know if you have any questions.
